History Paper Assignment
For this assignment, you will respond to ONE of the following prompts in 6-8 pages:

Describe the history of Native Americans
Describe the history of African Americans
Describe the history of American women
Describe the history of rebellion in AmericaBecause our class only covers American history from prehistory to Reconstruction (1870s), please only use this time frame for your essays. You may start your essay at any given time within this time frame. For example, if you’re writing about women, you don’t have to start with native women in North America before Columbus, although you are welcome to. You can start and stop at any point. Also, you can interpret the prompts in any way you would like. For example, if you’re writing about women, you can choose any group of women, from women of color to women of upper or lower class. If you’re writing about rebellion, you can write about black resistance during slavery, rebellions within social classes, or Native American resistance in the 19th century. How you interpret the prompt is completely up to you. Please use your lecture notes to address the prompt. You do not have to credit the lectures. If you need more historical context, you are welcome to use the textbook I have provided on Canvas, Eric Foner’s Give Me Liberty! If you choose to use the textbook, please be sure to credit it in your paper and your bibliography. No outside research, beyond lecture and Eric Foner, is permitted. Only use the topics that have been covered in class. Also, along with your description of history, your paper must include AT LEAST fiveprimary sources from your readings. You need to use these primary sources to support your retelling of history. If you would like to use more than five primary sources, please feel free to do so!You can organize your paper however you’d like, but I would suggest grouping your ideas into chronological order or by theme. For example, if you pick the history of women, you could start with the 16th century and move forward in time throughout your paper. If you choose to do this by theme, you can begin your paper with the history of African American women, then the history of middle-class women, then the history of upper class white women, and so on. If you need help formatting your essay, please visit the writing center or meet with me!Your first draft is due on March 21st in class. This paper should be at least 3-4 pages long, half the length of your final paper. No particular format is required for your

draft. Just give me whatever you have. On this draft I will give you ample feedback on how you’re doing, along with suggestions on what to cover for the rest of the paper. Although you can technically give me 3 pages of an outline, do remember that the more you give me, the more feedback I can provide.
Your final paper is due on May 23rd in class, before your final exam. Here is what you will need for the final paper:
[ ] Cover page (Name, date, class, title: A Brief History of [your topic], [time period]) [ ] Number each page[ ] Double-spaced[ ] 12 pt. font, Times New Roman
[ ] 6-8 pages in length[ ] Footnotes throughout[ ] At least 5 primary sources [ ] Bibliography page

Take deep breaths—this is an exercise in writing and putting your thoughts into a structured short essay. That’s it. There’s no need to feel scared or overwhelmed. Attempt this assignment one step at a time, and you’ll do fine.
Try to have fun with this—I’d love to see your writing style and your interpretation of history!

PLEASE NOTE: Depending on the topic you choose, you could write way more than 8 pages on a subject. Please, please keep your paper at 8 pages or less. Part of learning how to write is knowingwhat to write so take the time to structure your essay properly. I appreciate it!
